Starting An Internet Business: Pick A Direction

You are ready to start an internet business. Many times the first stumbling block for beginners is not making a decision about the direction they are going to take. There are many ways to start an internet business — selling on eBay, selling affiliate products, buying and selling reprit rights products, or blogging on niche markets.

Even if you do some or all of these things at some time or other, it is important that you begin with one thing at a time. But the first decision you need to make is to choose a “broad” topic in which you are interested. You can’t stop there, however. A broad topic is too vague and in all likelihood there will be too much competition

What does that mean? Let’s look at each of these methods of building an online business.

  • Selling on eBay – Some people sell a variety of products, whatever they can find to sell. But the successful eBay marketers choose a category that they can dominate. This allows them to buy in volume to offer the best prices possible. For instance, instead of selling all kinds of electronics, you might sell DVD recorders and accessories.
  • Selling Affiliate Products – Even though you are selling products created by someone else, you still need to be knowledgeable about the subject. You will need to tell your customers about the product with reviews, articles, or maybe blog entries. Instead of selling sports books of any kind, you might decide to sell golf books or even more specific, “Tips to Improve Your Swing”.
  • Buying and Selling Reprint Books — The same thing applies to “Resale Rights” products as did to selling affiliate products. The books you buy to resell must be in a topic that you can show your customers that you are an expert. Try to avoid internet marketing in general in favor of “Blogging” or some other specific program.
  • Blogging – It has become a very popular way to earn money online. It is possible to be “live” without as many complicated skills, such as HTML and advanced web page design. If you were to develop a blog on cooking, it would be much more difficult than if you pick a more detailed subject, Mexican Specialties or Eggs, Eggs, Eggs.

Ask yourself again. What am I going to promote? What niche am I going to enter? What is the focus of my business? It is time to come up with the main idea for your business.
